RIP
1976-2008
Dora Perez

Dora, my youngest sister, died in a drunk-driving collision at the age of 32. I wrote this poem which I shared at an Every 15 Minutes event at Selma High School to educate others about the dangers of drunk driving.

Little Sister

The initial shock, the ever-present pain

that we won’t ever see our loved one on this earth again.

One poor choice, one bad move, one negligent man

took her live and changed ours.
We’ll never be the same.

The killer? . . . he stayed, but my  little sis left.

With the impact of the crash, in an instant she was dead.

The tears from our loss form a sea without end

for my parents still grieve and wonder why them?

Amidst all of this some blessings were sent.

I can tell you with certainty, and my parents can attest

of  a March Easter Sunday they will  never forget.

Dora’s  last day alive, she spent it with them.

I hope you will listen and not drink and drive.

You might  be the next killer or the one to die.

Stop and think of your family, stop and think of your friends

Every day we make choices!

Oh, please spare them the pain!
